CGW were involved in this multi-faceted project which involved initially strengthening and upgrading an existing 3 story building and then the addition of a new two story structure constructed using LVL timber and a CLT floor system both of which were supplied locally by specialist timber suppliers, Nelson Pine and Xlam.

The post and beam structure is all pre-cut using CNC equipment and incorporates diagonal, ground level bracing and seismic dissipation elements. The building is designed for damage avoidance, and these displacement elements allow it to rock in an earthquake. They can then be easily replaced following an event minimising cost and disruption.

For the client the end result is a modern contemporary building that is interesting, with timber elements exposed, vibrant and functional to work within. Our innovative timber design knowledge and experience has led to CGW being approached recently by leading experts in the timber industry to advise on standards and guidelines.
