Wairua Hop Garden Facility
Location:
Nelson
Disciplines Involved:
CGW Project Management
Project Timeframe:
December 2019 - In Progress
The Nelson region of New Zealand has a long history in the growing and processing of hops used to brew beer. The fertile soils, regular rainfall and warm summers provide an ideal growing environment for the plants, and the region is considered the centre of the hop industry in New Zealand. The area is experiencing a growth in the demand for the hops it produces. Wairua Hop Garden Partnership Limited (WHGPL) recently invested in a 120-hectare hop garden and drying facility in the Korere area south of Nelson, intending to modernise and increase output from the existing infrastructure.
Their agent approached CGW in late 2019 to assist with the design plans to construct a mechanical processing plant that was required to pick and dry hops before the 2022 harvest.
With an immovable deadline due to crop harvesting requirements and a capped budget, WHGPL required the services of consultant partner who were experienced and capable of completing the consenting and procurement of a base build contractor quickly and cost effectively. There was a complex inter-relationship between the building and equipment that required specialist design to meet fire protection provisions. CGW provided the Fire Design services to meet authority regulations and compliance.
CGW were able to ensure a cost effect and manageable solution for compliance, by fostering open communications and working closely with the consent’s authority and the conceptual designers. Management of the complex inter-relationship between the building and the specialist hop processing equipment required careful co-ordination between local and offshore vendor suppliers and the building designers.
CGW’s input into the procurement of a design build contractor ensured timely handover to fit out contractors resulting a very cost effective building to house equipment
This building project is currently under construction and on target to be completed before the beginning of the 2022 harvest.
