Nelson Petroleum Distributors (NPD) is a New Zealand family owned and operated leader in the fuels industry. NPD saw a growing demand for affordable fuel and decided to rapidly expand their network of self-service stations throughout the South Island. With an extensive South Island network now in place, NPD are embarking on an expansion into the North Island, aiming to bring more competitive fuel prices to motorists.
To deliver on this expansion NPD needed an engineering partner who understood their vision. They saw CGW as an ideal partner with technical capability, and teams in different parts of New Zealand. As a core part of this partnership, CGW were engaged to create a standardised canopy design for their fuel stations. Each canopy is constructed on-site in a variety of locations, so it was important to develop a design that was adaptable and scalable. They also need to be efficient to build and cost effective, often in remote locations.
NPD’s ambitious programme means timeframes are important and having a responsive engineering partner makes all the difference. CGW provide the full structural design of the steel petrol station canopies and associated foundations for building consent. NPD’s canopies vary depending on the location of the service stations. They can be as small as 75 m² right up to 550 m².
Central to the success of our partnership is the relationship we have with NPD’s other consultants and contractors, ensuring the designs are fit for purpose and adaptable depending on the local weather conditions and earthquake risk. Being standalone structures, sometimes in exposed locations, they need to be engineered to a high standard to be resilient while still looking great.
The success of our partnership with NPD has seen us deliver the structural designs for over 50 service stations and two convenience stores so far. With many more to come we look forward to continuing our relationship with NPD and helping them realise their vision for New Zealand motorists.
